PM Modi Highlights Indian leadership in AI at AI Action summit held in Paris.
Paris, France Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday highlighted India’s role in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) and pledged to make it available in a responsible manner. Speaking at the AI Action Summit at the Grand Palais in Paris, which he co-hosted with French President Emmanuel Macron, PM Modi highlighted how India has emerged as a global hub for AI innovation, governance, and talent development.
In his speech the prime minister reiterated India’s prominent role in the responsible use of AI, saying that the G20 under India’s presidency had been able to reach consensus on how to use AI for the common good. He pointed out that AI is not just a technological advancement but a transformative force that will shape the future of humanity.
India’s AI Talent and Digital Infrastructure
PM Modi stressed India’s advancements in AI by highlighting the fact that India has one of the world’s largest AI workforce, etc. He also highlighted the nation’s ability to integrate AI with a robust digital public infrastructure that serves over 1.4 billion people at minimal cost.

PM Modi also spoke about the longstanding cooperation between India and France, particularly in the field of renewable energy. He talked about such projects as the International Solar Alliance which has brought the two countries to collaborate in order to use solar power efficiently .
“India and France have worked together for years through initiatives like the International Solar Alliance to harness the power of the Sun. With our partnership of AI we must build on sustainability to innovation, in order to foster a smarter and more responsible future,” he remarked.
He emphasized that sustainable AI is not limited to the clean energy. Appealing to the need for model efficiency in terms of size, data requirement and resource use, he claimed AI models should be efficient in size, data and resource usage to provide long term sustainability. He made a comparison between the AI and the brain of man, emphasising its stunningly effective way.
“After all, the human brain manages to compose poetry and design spaceships using less power than most light bulbs,” he noted, underscoring the need for AI systems to be similarly efficient.
India’s Vision for AI Development
PM Modi announced that India is in the process of developing its own large language model, tailored to its diverse population and linguistic richness. He stressed that AI should be developed in a way that benefits all sections of society and should not become an exclusive tool for a select few.
“We have a also a novel public-private partnership model for resource sharing such as computing power, which is made available to startups and researchers at a comparatively low cost. India is ready to share its experience and expertise to ensure that the AI future is for good and for all,” he added.
The prime minister spoke about the issues around Artificial intelligence exceeding human intelligence, and the risks associated with it. He recognised the fears that certain people feel about machines outsmarting humans, however he assured the audience that the destiny of AI in the long term will always remain in human control.
“Some people worry about machines becoming superior in intelligence to humans. But no one holds the key to our collective future and shared destiny other than us humans. That sense of responsibility must guide us,”* he said.
India’s Commitment to Ethical AI
With the rapid advancements in AI, PM Modi highlighted the need for ethicality and governance in AI, in the space. He emphasized the fact that in India, responsible use of AI has been programmed, and AI should not be turned into a tool of damage and exploitation.
He described as an example the Indian strategy to protect namely innovation while fulfilling ethical responsibilities, i.e., how to use AI for the benefit of humankind rather than a replacement for it.
