India Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) stated on November 2 it engages with Washington after the United States imposed sanctions on several individuals and entities, some from India, who allegedly supported Russia’s defence industrial complex amid the Ukraine war. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said, “We have come across these news reports stating U.S. sanctions.” Regarding the above mentioned controversies we said that; “We are in contact with the relevant authorities in the United States to discuss these concerns.”
The United States has recently released a list of close to 400 persons and companies who according to latest sanctions contribute to extension of war in Ukraine by Russia. List of top universities is inclusive of countries such as China, India, Malaysia, Thailand Turkey and UAE, as highlighted by an official release from the U.S department of state.
During his weekly briefing answering questions, Jaiswal said that India has an ‘effective legal and structural framework’ in place on strategic trade and non-proliferation control. “We are also a member of three important multilateral non proliferation export control regimes,” he added that India is strongly committed to international non proliferation norms.
Jaiswal also said that as in line with India’s well-orchestrated non-proliferation policy, the MEA is in consultation with departments concerned to apprise the Indian companies about the provisions and measures around export control along with new regulation that may apply to a specific case.
The U.S. has said that its new sanctions are meant to disrupt not only global sanction-dodging networks but also domestically based Russian entities that are key to the supports of Russia’s military-industrial complex. This is especially for importers and producers of materials and technology that are vital to the Russians military.
Indo approach is still seeking an entry to Washington on matters affecting its business and also on measures towards non-proliferation standards due to shifting dynamics in geopolitics.
