PDP and Congress members raised a hue and cry in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly on Thursday when the speaker had to adjourn the house briefly after advocate special status for the region, BJP members start protesting. The resolution passed the House the previous day, which demanded the Centre establish a constitutional structure to reinstate the special status.
While the bedlam was still on, BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition Sunil Sharma was explaining the resolution when Sheikh Khursheed Ali, an AIP chief and MLA from Langate, jumped into the well of the House brandishing a banner that said “Recovery of Article 370 and 35A”. Aggressing to this act, BJP members rushed to the well, captured the placard and shredded it.
The Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, arose to contain the hustle but later adjourned the meeting for fifteen minutes. Nevertheless, BJP members remained cordoning the floor even after the adjournment and raised their level of disruption.
Previously, the House had been relatively quiet after the Wednesday’s resolution passed. Nevertheless, elements of the BJP walked and raised the level of voices to such an extent that theSpeaker had to adjourn the House business for the day.
The resolution was moved by the Dy Chief Minister of J&K – Surinder Choudhary. It insisted, “This legislative assembly claims that the special status as well as the constitutional provisions, which preserved the identity, culture, and rights of the people of Jammu and Kashmir were abandoned unilaterally.”
The Assembly asked India administration to engage the elected representatives of JK and come with constitutional frameworks to reconsider the special status and safeguards of the region in the country.
