Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov, chief of Russia’s Nuclear, Biological, and Chemical Protection Troops, was killed in a bomb blast in Moscow on Tuesday, as reported by Reuters. The explosion occurred outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt, not far from the Kremlin.
As it was to be expected, the bomb was concealed in an electric scooter and the explosion killed Kirillov and one other person.
A statement released by the Russian investigative committee confirmed:
The pinnacle of radiation, chemical and biological protection forces of the armed forces of the Russian Federation Igor Kirillov and his assistant died.”
Images captured at the scene portrayed a collapsing entrance of the building, objects around the area and blood soaked snow with two corpses of the victims near the explosion spot.
The attack has caused a Criminal probe, and the Russian authorities are closely searching for the attackers and the reasons for the attack. The idea of an electric scooter used in the carriage of a bomb is worrisome in terms of the changing strategies used in such acts.
Kirillov was one of the principal main actors in Russia, managing Chemical-Biological-Nuclear protection of the Russian military. His demise is a huge set back to Russian body especially armed forced taking into account his rank and responsibility on national security operations.
The bombing took place at a time when there is increased instability in the global politics and leaders world over classed this is a terrorist act but to date no group has come out to own it. First of all, the officials are trying to establish contacts with local or foreign actors if any.
This has raised fresh alarms of insecurity in Moscow especially after the government put in place strict measures to ensure that this does not happen again. It remains further as authorities seek to offer more information on this gruesome attack.
